Assalaamu alaikom! :)

I am very interested in zaydism and also I am very new to it. In fact I just heard about it first time today. I am muslim convert who does not speak arabic, so there is very limited ammount of information. One thing I was wondering is that since zaydis are shias but they are not like twelvers, what do zaydis think about sunni hadith books such as tirmidhi, muslim and bukhari? Are they reliable according zaydis? If they are not, why not? And if yes, do zaydis also consider shia hadith books like al-kafi reliable among bukhari and others that I mentioned above? I have heard that zaydis have own hadith books? So do they consider only them reliable or are sunni books / shia books also reliable?

I am sorry for disorganized message and questions, also english is not my first language  . I know that there might be somene who has asked you same questions before me, therefore I am sorry to ask you same again but I could not find answers

JazakAllah khair for your answers :)

wa alaykum as salaam!

Thank you for your question! You are most welcomed to ask any question you like and hopefully we can answer satisfactorily!

As for the ahadith, we accept some of the narrations from Sunni and 12er hadith books as long as they conform to what is narrated in Zaydi sources. We addressed the issue of acceptability of ahadiths in another posting . Please have a read of that.

On a whole, Zaydi books of hadith tend to be a fraction of the size of Sunni or 12er ahadiths. Most Zaydi hadith books tend to not exceed more than one volume. That gives you an idea of the scrutiny that is placed on ahadith from a Zaydi perspective. Much of what is narrated from our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, lacks the integrity to be accurately attributed to him. Each group falsified ahadith to support their school and position. It is therefore incumbent that we critically analyse every narration that has come down to us--no matter who narrated it.

Much of what is in al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Kafi and other texts reflect a bias towards certain agendas. There are also narrations in them that defy logic and don't make sense. Some reports clearly contradict the Qur'an. We take all of that into consideration when examining the books of ahadith. Our imams and scholars have conducted studies and researches about many of these reports.

Hopefully, this addresses your question! If not, don't hesitate to ask for clarification.

If I may ask, how did you come to enter Islam and how did you first learn about the Zaydi school?

And Allah knows best!

Thank you so much for your answer. I got it now :)

I became muslim in 2012 alhamdulillah. I come from christian lutheran background. I have always been interested in another cultures, languages and believes. When others went online to use Facebook and such, I went online to find information about the things I wanted to know more. I live in west and in our school teacher must tell little basics about all big religions. I guess that was breaking point for me when teacher told us about islam. Since what he told was only litte drop of ocean I wanted to know more about everything. I started to read books and info in internet. Then one day I accidently find one muslim who was living in our very small town. I spoke with him and told him that I had been interested in islam for long time. He asked me if I was going to become muslim. So with him I took my shahada and from that on I have been muslim alhamdulillah. Now I guess the big love story and marriage would be next to come up, thats what all are thinking when reading this haha :) But that never happened. In fact, I never again saw that man in face to face.

So first when I converted I became sunni muslim. I knew from the beginning that there are sunni and shia muslims. What I always heard about shias were really negative things. But those things always came from sunni muslims. I still did not know real facts about shias. I started to become more and more interested about shia islam. Why did all people that I had met seemed to hate shias. What could be so bad about it. Those were some things that were running on my mind. I started to find information myself from good sources. For 3 years I stayed sunni. After some time of studying I converted to shia. A year went by and I started to have doubts about shia islam. It did not feel right that imams are infallible and how could it be that Imam mahdi could have born and gone hidden? Specially 12ers beliefs about Mahdi as got me thinking. I had same feelings as when I was christian. That could not be right. Now I am not saying here that 12ers are same as christians, but some of their beliefs did not make sense to me. Thats what I mean by saying I had same feeling as christian. I started to think about converting back to sunni. Just now it would not be that simple anymore to be sunni. I believe that Imam Ali as is successor of Muhammad saws. But then I heard about zaydis on Facebook in our (12ers) mosque facebook group here in Finland. I had never heard about zaydis before so I started to look for information about them in internet. Then after while I found salvationark. Now I have been reading about zaydism for two days. I feel like I am ready to become zaydi. That feels like really rational deen.

I dont know about everything about zaydis, but I already consider myself as one. Now I am just here trying to learn more about this deen. I am so happy to find this page since there is not too much information about zaydism in english B)

As salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh!

Thank you so much for your reply and for sharing your story with us! As you said, it is very important that we utilise our God-given logic when it comes to religious inquiries and issues. Much of the problem of both Sunni and Shii strands of thought is that they tend to stress blind acceptance of traditions and not promote the value of thought. Obviously, I don’t mean that we throw out the ahadith. It’s noteworthy that the oldest collection of ahadith is the Musnad of Imam Zayd (as). However, we must not sacrifice our minds on the altars of fossilised traditions. This can be seen as the downfall of much of what we call Islamic civilisation. For example, it doesn’t seem compatible that early Muslims were the first to study the digestive and nervous systems but then also believe that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, died by the poison of a Jewish woman four years after she supposedly did so! Such defies logic and cannot be accepted despite who narrated it. There are many other examples I can mention.

Anyways, we urge you to continue your studies and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

And Allah knows best!

Yours,

IRS
