Salamu alaykum,

What is the Zaydi tafsir of the following ayah?

"And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me." (Quran 51:56)

Quite a number of Sunni commentators point out that the phrase "worship me" actually means "to know Allah" which is based on an interpretation attributed to Ibn Abbas. Does this interpretation have any linguistic or theological value, and what is the Zaydi tafsir?

Thank you for your question! As for the tafsir of the said verse, I never came across anything in Zaydi sources that authentically connects it to Ibn Abbas. Also, one of our imams, Imam al-Qasim ar-Rassi, upon him be peace, said after quoting this verse that worship here refers to knowledge of Allah, knowledge of what pleases Him and knowledge of what displeases Him, as well as acting on what pleases Him and refraining from what displeases Him. So, knowledge is deficient without action and action is deficient without knowledge. Knowing Allah is only part of worship.
