wa alaykum as salaam wa rahma!

Thank you for your questions! According to our imams, the verse that you referenced refers to obedience to the imams of Ahl al-Bayt, upon them be peace. Imam an-Nāŝir al-Haqq (as) narrated on the authority of Ja’far bin Muhammad as-Šādiq, upon them be peace, that Abu Maryam asked him who {those of authority} are that are religiously obligatory to obey. He replied: “Ali, as well as al-Hasan, al-Hussein and their descendants.”

The object of the second command to obey is {those of authority}, so we are similarly commanded to obey the imams of Ahl al-Bayt, upon them be peace. It does not matter that the verb {obey} was repeated before ulil amr minkum; it is the object of the verb.

And Allah knows best!

Why is that if you disagree you go back to Allah and the prophet but bypass the ulil amr ?

Asalam Alaykum wa rahamat Allah,

Brother Mirpur Man, can you elaborate what you mean. The answer above clearly that it means it is religiously obligatory to obey Ahlul Bayt.

Did I misunderstand your question?

What I mean is when the verse talks about disagreement. It states go back to Allah and the messsnger. What is the meaning of the last part since if there is a disagreement among the believers, it would make sense to go back to Allah the messsnger and ulil amr. We have been commanded to obey all 3. Yet the ulil amr are bypassed when a disagreement occurs.
As if the verse is saying obey them unless there is a disagreement, In Which case go back to Allah and the Prophet. ?
Hope this makes sense.

The main purpose without a doubt is to obey Allah (SWT). Obeying the prophet is obeying Allah (SWT). As the prophet (pbuh&hp) said : ( من أطاعني فقد أطاع الله ومن عصاني فقد عصى الله ... ) (Whoever obeys me they have obeyed Allah and whoever disobeys me they have disobeyed Allah ... ). ْUlil alamr must follow the commands of the prophet, in doing so they are obeying Allah(SWT.)

How does Ulil Amr follow Allah and his messenger? by following the Quran and the Sunna of the prophet (pbuh&hp)

This is to affirm that in order to obey Ulil Alamr they must be following the Quran and the Sunnah of the prophet (pbuh&hp.) If there is doubt in Ulil Amr's commands then Ulil Amr must use the Quran and Sunnah as proof.

In sha Allah this answers your question.
