As salamu 'alaykum !

I wonder why the madhhab of Ahl Ul Bayt is called " Zaydi " ? Why not 'Alawi, Fatimi or another name derived from another Imam than Imam Zayd Ash Shahid (alayhi as salaam) ?

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahma!

Thank you for your question! As for the name "Zaydi", it implies the characteristic of rebellion against an unjust ruler under the leadership of an Alawi Fatimi imam. This is the characteristic that sets Zaydis apart from other Shia. Imam Zayd (as) exhibited this though he was definitely not the first.

Although imams such as al-Hussein (as) led a defensive against the Umawi tyrant of his time, he was a ma'suum ─▒mam explicitly appointed by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. If we were to call ourselves Husseini, for example, that would imply that our theology holds that subsequent imams resemble al-Hussein (as) in 'isma and explicit appointment by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. However, Imam Zayd (as)--as great as he was--was not ma'suum or explicitly appointed by the Prophet. Rather, he was a sincere Fatimi Alawi imam unparalleled in his knowledge of the Quran and the traditions of his venerable forefathers who led and called for rebellion against the tyrants of his day. It is for this reason that those who followed him in this and became partisans, or shia, of the imams after him are termed "Zaydis."

And Allah knows best!
